Pugs of Color

This book  and many others show undeniable proof that silvers, whites, and Brindles not only existed, but played an important role in  the  breed's history .

This is a topic of  conversation among all pug lovers, hobby breeders, show breeders and pet owners.
First let me start by saying there are "some" out there who feel pugs of color should not be bred, shown,or even acknowledged by the AKC registry.
YES Pugs originally came in a variety of colors such as  these, and then thru the years certain  breeders have systematically culled

(meaning of culled below)

1. To pick out from others; select.
2. To gather; collect.
Something picked out from others, especially something rejected because of inferior quality.(or color)

the colors down to the preferred black and fawn, and now behave as if a white,or a silver/grey pug is a result of mixed breeding or a deformity. But low and behold these beautiful and healthy pugs rear their heads with out notice because these colors are in the original genes of the PUG breed ,only no one would know this as the AKC  following orders from the Pug Dog Club of America in years past had made those with WHITE or SILVER/GREY,CHOCOLATE, BRINDLE etc.. register their pugs only fawn or black for many years,so how would anyone really know if a grandmother, great grand father etc... is really a white,or a silver/grey pug etc..????? * The Answer- They would NOT know this. Years ago the AKC began getting pictures of white ,Brindle,Party colors etc.. and had to start registering these pugs by their accurate colors. White is now registered white, and Brindle is registered Brindle, but silver./grey is still being registered as a silver/fawn which it is NOT. As the definition of silver/fawn is the color of moonlight, not silver/grey..This does not make any sense at all.
It is my hope and the hope of ALL those memebers of the PUGS OF COLOR CLUB that with more support we can all help make the needed change with in the AKC regsitry, and until this change comes about we who support all authentic Pugs of Color can be the change we wish to see.
We realize that AKC is only following orders from the Pug Dog Club of America who set the standards for the pug breed. Each breed has a parent club that is in charge of this . But in regards to the pug breed there are only about 420 members in the PDCA setting the standards for the millions of us who have pugs. This is a very  low # of members for the 12 most poplular breed in the US.
It is within our power to support what we believe in and each one of us has the ability  to write the PUG DOG CLUB OF AMERICA  who sets or decides on the standards for the AKC  and request  they to do what is right, and add these authentic colors to the AKC registry and the  STANDARD.
Yes they are already registered by the AKC as a true pug,and have been since the registry began, but they are not treated fairly and  recognized in the show ring because the Pug Dog Club of America(run by older generation show breeders) does not feel they represent their idea of the  the "classic pug" so does not classify them as a part of the  pug standard:(

We are working with the Pug Color Club right now that supports AKC pugs of Colors as a standard, please show your support by joining this club, and being a part of the positive movement toward fair treatment and breeding practices of these authentic colors. www.PugColorClub.com

These naturally occurring colors have been in the pugs true lineage since the beginning of the breed and are documented in many many books on the origin of the pug breed. The standard colors are just that "standard"~ meaning they are what is often bred, shown and seen when referring to the typical/average pug . The AKC does register white pugs as AKC white because they could not continue to lump them into the fawn or black catagory, however they have been told by the PDCA to lump the silver/grey into the fawn catagory, which  we hope to  change very soon...They do continue to register these colors as they must recognize the true genetics of all AKC dogs no matter what the typical standard colors are. Do not let  unscrupulous show breeders  get away with false claims of breed mixing  to cast doubt on the authenticity of these true colors as they have been trying to do for years. There was a time when these same type of people frowned upon the color black in the show ring as well .
Today I have noticed that there are still many judges who favor the fawn over the black in the show ring.  Times have definately changed as there are  now more breeders  focusing on breeding good quality black pugs and they have become just as loved and revered to many as the various shades of fawn.

Our pugs are only AKC registered and are of the same pure decent and genetics as the fawn and black pugs as you can see from the documentation in the history books.
We pride our selves on breeding with honesty,& integrity~
and stand behind each and every AKC registered pug that is bred, raised, and adopted from our farm.
Speaking negatively of another breeder is both low class and morally wrong ,and hurts the reputation of all breeders, so we will not lower ourselves to speak negatively of certain Show breeders who  favor fawns and blacks only, and have maliciously slandered us and tried to bring our honesty as breeders into question because they do not want these pugs of color recognized in the show ring.
The registry itself  has documented our pugs true colors  through pictures, pedigree,DNA..& registered them as such. However many pugs of color are not registered their true colors as the owner believes their only choices are from the standard colors on the forms and so registers them under a false color instead of the dogs true color,so there is not a true record kept on these many, many generations of pugs of color.Standard colors being various shades of fawn, including silver/fawn,& black. Our pugs of color are registered what they technically are which is "white,"& "Silver"~not  to be confused  with a silver/fawn,which is a fawn pug void of any black hairs throughout the body with the exception of the mask, ears and a possible trace along the back.

The funny thing here is a white pug has produced True silver/fawns which there has supposedly not been a sighting  of in many years ~ hmmm go figure.

Right now we are working with the AKC to get all silver/grey pugs registered as a silver/grey instead  of silver/fawn  which it is not  as it is void of fawn hair, nor would it fall under the black category. We have contacted the Pug Dog Club Of America  with this issue as they set the standards for color registration at the AKC and we have asked that they allow the color distinction  on the registry so that they are recognized for their true coloring. We will let everyone know what the outcome is when they respond to our requests.
They have yet to do so.
We raise and breed only pugs and our pugs are exposed to no other breed and as such our pugs can be nothing but genetically pure AKC pugs.Ultimately we believe the public  is intelligent enough to figure this one out for themselves, but we wanted to help clear up any confusion on the matter.
Thank you to all those who have supported our breeding mission  and love for these truly  wonderful dogs~both standard and pugs of color. © Funny Farm Pugs....

Our Diversity Photo was desicrated by a local show breeder who  has just finished vet school and is about ready to go into private practice...This action and behavior was supported by show breeders and PDCA (Pug Dog Club of America members)all over the U.S.!Are these the kind of people we want representing our breed and practicing medicine on our pets???

This was a letter I answered in refrence to color, and may help  answer the color registration question that you have about Pugs of Color...

Name: D****a C*****

Comments: Hello.  I am researching the registry on the Pug breed because I will be soon purchasing a female for breeding purposes.  The AKC website states the following:  DISQUALIFICATION- Any color other than fawn or black.  SO...my question is how can you advertise that those other colors (brindle, white, etc.) are AKC accepted.  Please advise

Dear Miss C******,

If you begin digging and researching all history behind  the pug breed you will find that pugs of all color have always been registered with the AKC for as long as fawn and black have, and if the AKC did not support them then they would NOT allow them be registered at all.

These colors have only recently become a disqualification in the AKC show ring  which was voted into affect by about 400 members of the PDCA, because pugs of color owners began entering them into shows and trying to exhibit them in the ring along side fawn and black pugs, and this angered many old time show breeders and PDCA members in both the and the Pug Dog Club of Canada who believed that ONLY fawn and black pugs should represent the breed standard, and they did not want to see them in the ring next to fawn and black...So they put their heads together and decided to change the Pug Dog standard which had NO DISQUALIFYING COLORS up until they pushed  for this change and voted it into affect.

We believe that had many show lines not continued to be closely inbred/line bred and the colors culled out you would see more of them coming out of Top show pugs..So as I stated they have always been registered and SUPPORTED by the AKC...just not the PDCA (Pug Dog Club of America) who the AKC had allowed to set the standard for the breed.

To give you an idea of the scope of this issue..There were about 614 members in the PDCA when several show breeders(and PDCA members) pushed for a vote to change the standard from acceptable colors to a disqualification in the ring so that those of us who wanted to show our silver/greys ,whites, and Brindles would not be able to go into the show ring with them and compete against the fawn, and black pugs...BEFORE THIS there was NO color disqualification within the AKC PUG BREED STANDARD..in fact it wasn't until the Brindle pug went into the show ring in Canada and was given a BLUE ribbon  by judge Harry Traske that these old time breeders stomped their feet and pushed for the standard change within the breed.

Out of 614 members within the PDCA,about 400 or so voted to change the standard for the first time ever to allow disqualifying colors...which had never been done before!...Now from what we have been told by friends who are PDCA members there has been  a decrease in membership to around 500 to 550 PDCA members, which is ridiculous for the 12 to14th most popular breed!!!

Do you know that the Portuguese Water Dog club (with very few registrations) has over 2,000 members?!!!!..and is the 62 most popular breed!!

What is so ridiculous is that 500 PDCA members have the right to dictate what is acceptable in colors or traits or anything else for that matter within this breed, and many of us have decided that enough is enough we will not be involved with a dictatorship  from a color prejudice group that can not even get along with each other.
Many of these people scare off  any new ones interested in becoming involved with this breed...Driving  them to backyard breeders and pet shops to buy a puppy! It is shameful!

These people are not discriminating based on health and temperament, as these pugs are passing health checks, eye, hip, and heart tests just fine(which we are encouraging all members with breeding pugs to do) ....so the real problem is discrimination against color, period...that is all this is.

Rather than focusing on the negative goings on in the PDCA we started This PUG club  to celebrate, and promote healthy, responsible breeding habits and pet ownership, and provide a focus and direction for those who love ALL AKC registered colors.

I hope that I have given you some things to think about and I do wish you well in your choice.

Warm Regards,
